It depends on three things: whose device you're using, which account you're signed into, and which network you're on. On a school Chromebook or a school Google account, assume your school can see a lot – even at home. On your own phone with your own account and mobile data, they see nothing.
The quick answer
| Situation | Can school see your searches? |
|---|---|
| School Chromebook or laptop, anywhere (including home) | Often yes – monitoring usually travels with the device |
| Signed into Chrome with your school Google account on your own device | Possibly – school settings and extensions can apply |
| Your own device on school Wi-Fi | Usually the sites you visit, not every search detail |
| Your own device, personal account, home Wi-Fi or mobile data | No |
Why schools monitor at all
Schools in England have a legal duty to keep children safe online. Statutory guidance (KCSIE) requires appropriate filtering and monitoring, overseen by the Designated Safeguarding Lead. It's mainly there to spot pupils at risk – searches about self-harm, grooming or extremism – not to catch you looking up football scores.
School Chromebooks and laptops
School devices are usually managed centrally. Monitoring tools on them can record the websites you visit and flag worrying searches – and because the software is on the device, it often works at home too. Some tools also capture what's typed or take screenshots when something is flagged.
Your school Google or Microsoft account
If you sign into Chrome or Edge with your school account – even on your own computer – school policies, extensions and history syncing can follow you. Activity in school apps (Docs, Gmail, Gemini, Copilot) belongs to the school's system. See can my school see my Gemini chats? and can my school see my Copilot history?

School Wi-Fi on your own device
On your own phone using school Wi-Fi, the network's filter typically sees which websites you visit, but not the full detail of secure pages. Some schools ask you to install a certificate for their Wi-Fi, which can let the filter see more – check what you've agreed to.
What about AI tools?
AI chatbots are treated like any other website: filtered and monitored on school systems. Visiting ChatGPT can be logged even if your chats can't be read. See can my school see my ChatGPT history? and can ChatGPT report you to your school?
For parents
If your child has a school device, it's worth asking the school what monitoring is in place and how it works at home. Good schools explain this openly. For AI specifically, see the safest AI homework tools for children.
Frequently asked questions
Can my school see my search history at home?
On a school Chromebook or laptop, often yes – monitoring software usually works wherever the device is. On your own device with a personal account, no.
