If you use Google Gemini signed in with a school account, can your school see what you type? The honest answer is that your school has more access than most people assume — but less casual visibility than people fear. Here is what is actually going on.

The short answer

When you use Gemini with a school Google Workspace for Education account, your activity belongs to your school's Workspace, not to you personally. Your school's administrators control whether Gemini is available, and depending on how your school has configured Google Workspace, Gemini activity can be subject to the same retention, audit and legal hold tools the school uses for email and Drive. That means it can be retrieved when there is a legitimate reason.

It does not mean someone is reading your chats day to day. These tools exist for safeguarding, legal and compliance reasons — a subject access request, a disciplinary investigation, a safeguarding concern.
