Short answer: if you use a personal ChatGPT account on your own device, your school cannot read your chat history. But three things change that – a school email address, a school device, and a school account – and that's where most people get caught out. Here's exactly what your school can and can't see.

"If I use my school email for ChatGPT, will they know?"

This is the most common version of the question. Signing up to a personal ChatGPT account with your school email address doesn't hand your chats to the school. But:

The simple rule: use your school email for school tools, and your personal email for personal ones.

School devices are different

Schools in England have to filter and monitor internet use to keep pupils safe – it's part of KCSIE filtering and monitoring. On a school laptop or Chromebook, that can include:

On a school device, assume anything you do could be seen if there's a safeguarding reason. See can my school see my search history? for the full picture.

Does ChatGPT tell your school anything?

No. OpenAI doesn't contact schools about what you ask. We explain the detail in can ChatGPT report you to your school? – including how teachers still spot AI-written work.

Using a school account? Same rules as Copilot and Gemini

If your school gives you AI through a school login – ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini – treat it like school email. It's there to protect you and your data, and the school can access it if it needs to.

For staff: the data protection angle

Staff using a personal ChatGPT account for school work is a bigger issue than privacy. Putting pupil names or details into a personal account can be a data breach. See why uploading pupil names to ChatGPT is a breach risk and what the DfE says about personal data and AI.
