Task types that resist AI

1. Anchored to your specific lesson

"Using the three examples we discussed on Tuesday and the diagram in your book, explain..." AI doesn't know what happened in your classroom. This is the single easiest change and it works immediately.

2. Personal response and local context

Work requiring the pupil's own experience, their own community, their own data. AI can fabricate this, but it produces generic answers that stand out sharply.

3. Process, not just product

Ask for the plan, the rough draft, the crossings-out and the reflection. Assess the journey. A pupil who generated the final answer has nothing to show.

4. Physical and practical

Measure something, build something, interview someone, photograph something. Simple and effective, particularly at KS3.

5. In-class writing on prepared work

Research at home, write in class. Keeps the preparation meaningful and the assessed writing genuinely theirs.

6. Critique and improve AI output

Give pupils an AI-generated answer with errors and ask them to find and correct them. This is harder than writing it themselves, teaches evaluation, and turns the tool into the object of study.

Write a Year 8 answer to this question that sounds confident but contains three specific factual errors and one weak piece of reasoning. Don't mark them — I want pupils to find them. Give me the list of errors separately.

Reframing rather than resisting

Some of the best KS3 homework now assumes AI use openly: "Use AI to generate three explanations of this concept, then decide which is best and justify why." The honest question to ask of any task: if a pupil completed this with AI in ten seconds, would they have missed the learning? If yes, redesign it. If no — if the task was busywork the learning didn't depend on — that's worth knowing too.

Be realistic about workload

Redesigning every task at once isn't feasible. Start with the homework that matters most — the extended written tasks, the ones that feed into assessment — and leave the low-stakes recall work alone; retrieval quizzes are largely AI-proof anyway because the point is the pupil's own recall. Tell pupils what the rules are

Much apparent cheating is genuine confusion about what's allowed. Be explicit, task by task, whether AI use is permitted, and what pupils must declare. Clear expectations prevent most problems.
